On this Trek there was a 6 man team about to take on this challenge to raise funds for Childaid.ie. The Team consisted of 6 Friends most Retired Members of the Defence Forces.

Patrick reached the good age of (66) On This Trek. The Logistics Backup Chairman of Childaid.ie Dermot Higgins Defence Forces (Retd).

Graham Tobin is the treasurer of Childaid.ie. He has organised this trek along with the Chief Guide Freddy. The Marangu Route also known as the “Coca-Cola Route” is the oldest and most well established trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro, and it remains extremely popular mainly because it is the only route on the mountain that has hut accommodation for trekkers. The distance of the Marangu route is approximately 82 km or 50 miles.

The Start

We depart Moshi for Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The hiking trail begins by ascending a beautiful, tropical rain forest. At the upper edge of the forest line, we have the opportunity to see blue monkeys. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut day 1 over.
